Mamas, please watch this story!!

This story is near and dear to my heart for two reasons. One, this mama is a friend of one our FIT4MOM mamas and we are so very sorry for their loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with this family. And two, this type of story is the reason I started this awesome franchise in McKinney 9 years ago. I too had postpartum depression with my first son and while it wasn't as bad as it could have been it was still a pretty dark time in my life. I didn't have all the feelings that you are "supposed" to have after you have a baby. I was sad and cried all the time and had lots of abnormal physical anxiety. I was afraid and thought I was a terrible mommy to this sweet little boy that I had just given life to. I fought getting help right away because I was ashamed of my feelings and the thought of being on an anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medication had such a bad stigma...


Hi mommas! For those who do not know me, my name is Shelly Hamrick, and I am a pediatrician. I met Leslie when we worked together at Acute Kids Urgent Care. I love educating parents and focusing on the prevention of illnesses and injuries. Since we are in the heart of the summer, I wanted to remind you of a few important things to keep our babies and toddlers safe and happy at our FIT4MOM classes and throughout the summer.


Sun damaged skin starts as soon as a child has their first sunburn and/or tan. Sunburns, tanned skin and freckles are all signs of sun damage. Sun damaged skin can lead to skin cancer and early skin aging later in life. Protection is important now!

Babies 6 months and younger:

1. Avoid sun exposure as much as possible.

2. Dress infants in lightweight long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and brimmed hats that shade the neck to prevent sunburn.

3. Avoid sunscreen if possible, but when adequate clothing and shade are not available, you can apply a minimal amount of sunscreen with at least 30 SPF...


The other day I was working out at Stroller Strides and I realized that no two moms in my group were alike. I couldn’t help but look around and start thinking of the diverse types of moms that come to spend their morning sweating it out with me. Here’s what I saw that morning.

The Preparer Mom - She's the mom that you can count on to pull an extra toy, snack, wipe, diaper, towel, batteries, etc out of her Mary Poppins stroller. She's the one we all wonder about. How does she do it? We are all so thankful for her on those days when we run out of wipes.

The Just Be Happy I’m Here Mom - She's always barely on time, meaning 5 minutes late. She's just glad to be out of the house and we are all secretly excited to hear the latest story of morning chaos.

The Rainbows and Butterflies Mom - She loves everyone! She knows all of the mother’s names and their children's names. She always remembers to ask about your latest problem, vacation, or triumph. She is just full of rainbows and butterflies! We all envy her skills and happiness. For...

When my daughter, Avery, was almost 2 months old, I was complaining to a friend about how childbirth had ruined my body. Her response was to invite me to a workout class called Stroller Strides. I just remember thinking, “Really!?! Stroller Strides!?!” What could possibly be going in at a class called Stroller Strides? Striding with strollers…strolling and striding…why such a silly name?

Curiosity got the best of me and I joined my friend for a free class. What I found was what I least expected.

1. I was acknowledged.

Most of the boot camp style work out classes I had been to consist of people that were over involved in stretching or too busy fake phone checking to even look up. By the time I had walked up to what would have been a daunting circle of mothers, all of them had taken a moment to say hello to us. It simply felt great to be welcomed!

2. Those mommas mean business!

By the end of the 1st set of burpees, I was gasping for breath. During the last set of bicep curls, I was seriously worried about whether or not I would be able to...


“You shouldn’t be lifting that..”

“You need to put your feet up and rest”

“Eat what you want, you’re eating for two!”

And if you have ever carried a baby around in utero for 9 months I am sure you can add to that list. Family, friends and even strangers are more than happy to share their opinions on what you need to be doing or not doing. Thankfully, and with a lot of help from social media, moms are starting to decide for themselves what they can and cannot do. And one thing they are deciding that they can do, is exercise!

I won’t go into all the details, it’s a small novel, but I have been blessed with 3 beautiful and slightly crazy babies. I was working full time with my first 2 pregnancies and did not exercise one single minute during them (or before them….oops). My first pregnancy was a hot mess, and I ended up delivering 10 weeks early to a barely 2 pound boy. Thankfully he was just little and needed to grow. However, after that due to complications during the pregnancy and my c-section I had now been moved into the high-risk category....
